First: Man without machines Second: Machines without God Third: God without Man From "Without" © WhiteSpace 2002 "If you see a musician performing live, your perception of their music is coloured by the way they look, by their expressions and even their clothes. If you then listen to their CD, your perception is coloured by the sleeve artwork and the quality of that recording. Even on the radio or over the internet we are aware of the presence of human beings behind the music. Therefore only by purging all emotion from the music can we begin to perceive its purity, untainted by the prejudice of performance, opinion or emotion" Wow. And to think I was going to ask him what his favourite colour was. WhiteSpace are interesting (though I'm sure they would prefer me to say that they weren't). The bandmembers all wear white, have identically-shaven heads and perform in a perfectly-white closed environment. This is more of a religious order than a group and tags like 'experimental' and 'ambient' tend to slide off them like leaves in an imaginary breeze. "We like trying out new ideas" (You don't say) "Our last piece was performed live with each member only hearing what the others were playing, and not themselves. Improvisation stripped down past the level of the individual until you are simply contributing to a collective which you, yourself - ironically - are not a part of" Nice. Did it sound any good? "Yes - we were pleased" It's impossible to describe WhiteSpace's music - not that they would want me to anyway. The only way to understand it is to go along to one of their performances and see it for yourself... ...just don't expect a mosh-pit. |
